How to Layer Skincare Products

Skincare routines can be so complex. There’s so many different types of products, each with their own consistencies, purpose, and role in the skincare regimen. It can get confusing! What product goes on first, how long do I have to wait before applying the next one, which products are okay to use together??

Here’s a quick chart I put together to help simplify things. Skincare should NOT be complicated (that’s our goal here at Drmianskin)

Take a look at the chart, and check out the tips below:

*Rule of thumb for skincare product application — Once you wash your face, thinner products go on first. That means any liquids - like toners or solutions one applies with a cotton pad — should go on first. Then your serums, as these are liquidy/runny as well. This is because of absorption. Thinner products will have more trouble absorbing into your skin if applied on top of something thick. That’s why products that are less viscous should be applied first, and thicker more viscous products applied on top.

*No need to wait between products! If you follow the above rule, well formulated products should absorb into your skin just fine. If you have the time, and discipline, then sure, you can follow the instructions on the packaging if it says to wait. However, if this will decrease the chance that you’ll get back to your routine, then go ahead and apply one after the other and call it a day!

*Retinoid tolerance can vary. Because retinoids can cause skin dryness or irritation, sometimes its beneficial to apply your moisturizer first, and then layer the retinoid on top. This will create a buffer between the retinoid and your skin, increasing your tolerance to this liquid gold

*If you use an AHA, like glycolic acid, and/or a retinoid, make sure you are wearing sunscreen! These products can increase your sensitivity to the sun

*Sunscreen ALWAYS goes on last. You want it as the top layer of your regimen to serve as the shield protecting your skin.

*Everyone’s skin is different, and you should use the products that work for YOU! Even products I recommend on my website — some may suit you, some may not. Ask a board certified dermatologist to evaluate your skin and make specialized recommendations for YOU.
